Indonesia Launches Campaign for UN Security Council Seat

RRI.CO.ID, New York — Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono officially launched Indonesia’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2029–2030 term in New York, United States, on Friday, September 25, 2026, local time.

Indonesia is running its campaign under the theme “Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace,” reflecting its commitment to bridging differences and strengthening efforts to promote peace. The campaign launch was attended by Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, Philippine Foreign Secretary Theresa P. Lazaro, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Georgia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Lasha Darsalia, and more than 130 representatives of UN member states, including Palestine.

As a candidate for a non-permanent seat on the UNSC for the 2029–2030 term, Indonesia has outlined four key priorities. First, to promote the Council’s preparedness in addressing an evolving security landscape. Second, to strengthen the peace continuum, from conflict prevention and mediation to peacekeeping and peacebuilding.

Third, to expand the participation of women and young people while strengthening cooperation with regional and subregional organizations. Fourth, to promote a UNSC that is more effective, transparent, and inclusive.

“The world needs a Security Council that is able to listen and, more importantly, deliver concrete action. Indonesia will bring its experience, commitment to dialogue, and readiness to work with all parties to seek common ground amid differences,” Sugiono said.

Sugiono said Indonesia’s commitment to international peace and security is mandated by the Constitution and has been a foundation of its independent and active foreign policy. He said Indonesia’s track record is reflected in the spirit of Bandung, its active role in ASEAN, and its contribution as one of the largest troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping missions.

Indonesia has served four times as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, in the 1973–1974, 1995–1996, 2007–2008, and 2019–2020 terms.
