RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The 10th anniversary of Türkiye’s thwarted coup attempt has become a moment of reflection on the resilience of democracy and the importance of strong national institutions.
Speaking in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, Turkish Ambassador to Indonesia Talip Küçükcan underscored that the events of July 15, 2016, remain a powerful reminder of how democracy must be safeguarded.
“The coup attempt of July 15, 2016, was a lesson in the importance of protecting democracy,” Ambassador Küçükcan said during the National Democracy and Unity Day commemoration. He emphasized that political change should only occur through democratic mechanisms, not through violence or the misuse of religion or ideology for political ends.
According to him, democracy can only endure when supported by legitimate governance and robust institutions. He added that defending democracy is a shared responsibility of all citizens, not just the government or the president.
“The society as a whole must play its part in ensuring the system functions well and can withstand threats to national stability,” he noted.
Joining the event via video link, Head of Communications for the Turkish Presidency, Burhanettin Duran, described July 15, 2016, as an unforgettable turning point in the nation’s history. “The resistance of the people, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that night, proved that the will of the people cannot be defeated by any force,” he said.
Duran stressed that the night of July 15 was when the Turkish people defended their independence, sovereignty, and democratic will. Under Erdoğan’s leadership, he added, the courage and determination shown by citizens demonstrated to the world that popular will cannot be subjugated.
“The steadfastness of society that night not only foiled the coup attempt but also marked a turning point that secured Türkiye’s future and its democratic journey,” Duran remarked.
The commemoration in Jakarta thus served as both a tribute to those who resisted the coup and a reaffirmation of Türkiye’s commitment to democratic governance. For Turkish officials, the anniversary is not only about remembering the past but also about reinforcing the collective responsibility to protect democracy against future threats. ***
