RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Egypt has reaffirmed the depth of its relationship with Indonesia, emphasizing the enduring role of Al-Azhar University in shaping cultural and educational exchanges between the two nations.

Speaking at the Egypt’s National Day reception in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Egyptian Ambassador Yasser Hassan Farag Elshemy described the bond as one that has spanned generations.

“Egypt and Indonesia share a special cultural and educational connection. This is reflected in the respected place Al-Azhar holds in the hearts and minds of Indonesians across centuries,” Ambassador Elshemy said, as quoted by Antara.

Al-Azhar currently provides hundreds of scholarships for Indonesian students and has sent around 70 scholars to Indonesia. More than 20,000 Indonesian students are now studying in Egypt, primarily at Al-Azhar.

The relationship was further strengthened in July 2025 with the establishment of a Department of Indonesian Language and Literature at Al-Azhar’s Faculty of Languages and Translation. “We are proud to host thousands of Indonesian students, whom we regard as our brothers and sisters,” Ambassador Elshemy added.

Beyond religious studies, Al-Azhar has expanded opportunities for Indonesians in fields such as medicine, engineering, dentistry, and pharmacy. Egypt is also working with the Indonesian ministries of health and higher education to ensure graduates can smoothly transition into professional practice upon returning home.

Ambassador Elshemy noted that President Prabowo Subianto’s three visits to Egypt since taking office reflect a renewed commitment to deepening bilateral ties.

A milestone was reached with the signing of a joint declaration elevating relations to a strategic partnership, covering cooperation in politics, economy, security, defense, culture, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

“These visits embody mutual respect and shared priorities, making Indonesia and Egypt important partners in building a stronger, fairer, and more peaceful world order,” Ambassador Elshemy concluded.

This reaffirmation of ties underscores Egypt’s role in nurturing educational and cultural diplomacy while strengthening its partnership with Indonesia in strategic cooperation and academic exchange. ***
