RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia and India are entering a new chapter of cooperation, transforming centuries‑old ties into a modern partnership in digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
In a statement confirmed in Jakarta on Saturday, August 1, 2026, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria said the collaboration builds on shared strengths: India’s experience in developing public digital infrastructure and Indonesia’s demographic advantage and strategic resources.
“India and Indonesia are not competitors chasing the same narrow path in AI. We complement each other,” he noted during the Overview of the AI Roadmap of Indonesia event in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara.
Nezar emphasized that Indonesia’s AI roadmap provides a regulatory foundation for concrete implementation. He stressed that Indonesia must not remain merely a market for global AI products but instead strengthen its own ecosystem through software, computing, data centers, and digital talent.
“Global competition has treated countries like Indonesia as markets, not builders of AI. Tonight, I want to firmly reject that mindset,” he said.
Indonesia’s strong position includes critical mineral reserves, a large youth population, and a strategic Indo‑Pacific location. The momentum for deeper cooperation grew following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit, which produced 16 new agreements.
Both nations also pledged to expand digital economic collaboration, including payment system integration and the Indonesia Open Network as a foundation for AI cooperation.
Nezar called for practical steps such as researcher exchanges, startup development, and increased R&D investment from Indian technology firms in Indonesia. “We invite Indian companies, from IT leaders to AI startups, to establish real research and development presence here--not just sales offices,” he urged.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring every collaboration delivers tangible benefits for both societies, while supporting Indonesia’s long‑term vision of Indonesia Emas 2045. ***
