RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Ambassador to Colombia, Tatang Razak, stood as the sole Asian representative among more than 20 international observers invited to monitor Colombia’s presidential runoff election, underscoring Jakarta’s growing role in global democratic engagement.
According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Bogotá on Monday, June 22, 2026, Ambassador Tatang was officially invited by Colombia’s Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) to join observers from across the world.
His monitoring duties included visits to polling stations in Medellín during the first round and in Bogotá during the second.
Voting concluded on Saturday, June 20, amid concerns of potential unrest fueled by political polarization. Despite earlier incidents of violence against journalists and candidates, the election proceeded smoothly without major disruptions.
After polls closed at 4 p.m. local time, international observers witnessed the ballot counting process at the election command center.
Preliminary tallies showed right‑wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella leading with 12,950,642 votes (49.65 percent), while left‑wing contender Iván Cepeda, backed by President Gustavo Petro, trailed with 12,702,592 votes (48.70 percent).
Colombia’s electoral commission is expected to announce the official results within a week. ***
