RRI.CO.ID, Bürgenstock - Iran and the United States negotiated at a summit in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, on Sunday, June 21, 2026, to discuss implementation of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed earlier. Mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, the meeting claimed to have made progress toward achieving peace in the Middle East.

Representing Pakistan is the Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir. Meanwhile, Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, represents his country at the summit.

In a joint statement by Pakistan and Qatar received on Monday, June 22, 2026, all four countries agreed to, among others, establish a high-level committee to provide political oversight on the mediation and ensure the effective implementation of the MoU. The high-level committee has agreed upon a roadmap towards a final deal to be reached within 60 days.

"In addition, a communication line between the parties has been formed... to avoid incidents and miscommunication with the aim of safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz," the joint statement said.

Pakistan and Qatar said the summit, called the Lake Lucerne Summit after the nearby lake, was conducted "in a positive and constructive atmosphere". They stated their will to do their utmost to ensure that the negotiations were conducted in a constructive atmosphere to reach the final deal.

"(Pakistan and Qatar) express their sincere appreciation to the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran for their ongoing commitment to diplomacy and a peaceful resolution to the conflict," the statement said.

At a press conference on Sunday, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said they can now see a future "where everyone can work together to promote peace and prosperity for everyone". Vance claimed they have already made progress, and he expects further progress hours after the conference.

"What we have already seen back home in the United States is lower gas prices. We've seen the free flow of oil and gas, we've seen peace, and now we're trying to build on that to see if we can build something even better and more sustainable for the future," he said.

Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, praised the Pakistani and Qatari mediation during the summit. In a posted statement on his X account on Monday, he said they has delivered major progress to end the recent war in Lebanon, one of the topics negotiated.

"Oil and petrochem exports are waived, blockade lifted, some frozen assets released, and major reconstruction & development plan launched for Iran," he said.

Earlier on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. counterpart Donald Trump had digitally signed the MoU, with Trump signing during his visit to the Palace of Versailles in Paris, France, with the French president Emmanuel Macron. The deal tries to end the three-month conflict and resolve some issues, including the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear fate.
