Indonesia Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting Palestinian Independence at UN

RRI.CO.ID, New York — Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people until their right to self-determination is fulfilled and an independent and sovereign Palestinian state is established based on the Two-State Solution, international law, and internationally agreed parameters.

Sugiono conveyed this during Indonesia’s National Statement at the General Debate of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States, on Saturday, September 26, 2026, local time.

Sugiono said Indonesia’s support for Palestine is closely linked to the Indonesian people’s own experience in fighting for independence from colonialism. According to him, this experience has shaped Indonesia’s support for the Palestinian people’s struggle and their right to determine their own future.

“Palestine is not merely an issue concerning one region. Palestine is a test of whether the multilateral system can uphold the principles upon which it was founded and deliver results when they are most needed,” Sugiono said.

He stressed that the strength of the multilateral system depends not only on its institutions but also on the principles upheld collectively. Therefore, Indonesia continues to call for the consistent enforcement of international law, respect for sovereignty, and an end to colonialism.

In the broader context of international peace and security, Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s readiness to continue contributing through diplomacy and mediation, humanitarian assistance, peacebuilding, and participation in UN peacekeeping missions. Since 1957, Indonesian personnel have served in various UN peacekeeping missions around the world.

The commitment also serves as the basis for Indonesia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2029–2030 term under the theme “Fostering Unity, Advancing Peace.” Sugiono explained that the theme reflects Indonesia’s efforts to rebuild trust in the multilateral system, keep channels for dialogue open, uphold international law, and make effective use of available instruments to promote peace.

Indonesia, he added, will continue to pursue a foreign policy approach based on keeping dialogue open, building common ground, consistently upholding the UN Charter, and translating shared responsibilities into concrete cooperation for international peace and security.
