RRI.CO.ID, Paris - The United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, to end more than three months of conflict that had affected global trade. The MoU, brokered by Pakistan and supported by Middle Eastern countries, was signed digitally by U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with Trump signing at the Palace of Versailles in Paris, France.
Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that the MoU had actually been finalized on Sunday. That is more than a month after negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, failed last April. Speaking before the signing, Trump said the agreement covers several issues, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz soon.
"On Sunday, we reached an agreement with Iran that achieves everything we set out to accomplish — everything and much more — ending the current conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and preventing Iran from ever obtaining a nuclear weapon," he said before the signing.
Trump claimed maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has already increased "very substantially". He believed the normal flow of energy would resume in the coming days.
"And trillions of dollars will be made by the world. And the stock market will, I believe, continue to rise," Trump continued.

Under the deal, as quoted from CNN, Iran agreed to "facilitate safe passage for commercial vessels without charging fees for the next 60 days" and enter into dialogue with Oman to define the strait's future administration and maritime services. Meanwhile, the U.S. agreed to begin the removal of its naval blockade and any disturbances or impediments against Iran, and will "fully end the naval blockade within 30 days".
Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, confirmed the signing, as quoted by the country's public broadcaster IRIB via its media arm Press TV on Wednesday. Though Iran is finalizing a new management for the strait in coordination with Oman, he said Iran will still charge fees for any vessels crossing.
"Iran will charge fees for services in the Strait of Hormuz. This mechanism and arrangements for managing the strait are being drafted," he said.
Baghaei warned that implementing the ceasefire agreement with the United States will be more difficult than signing it. Thus, he said that Iran would monitor the United States’ compliance with the agreement.
"The fact that we have signed an agreement to end the war at this stage does not mean we have forgotten the past or abandoned the costly lessons we have learned," he said.
