First Political Consultations, Indonesia-Qatar Discuss Strategic Cooperation

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Qatar have agreed to hold a Strategic Dialogue at the Foreign Minister level later this year to strengthen bilateral cooperation in politics, defense and security, economic affairs, and socio-cultural exchanges.

The agreement was among the key outcomes of the First Indonesia-Qatar Political Consultations held in Jakarta on Monday, June 15, 2026, led by Indonesian Vice Foreign Minister Muhammad Anis Matta and Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad bin Sultan Al Muraikhi.

In an official statement issued on Monday, Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated the inaugural meeting marked an important milestone in strengthening the friendship and partnership between the two countries, while establishing a more structured framework for cooperation on bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual interest.

During the meeting, the two delegations also agreed to accelerate the completion of several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) currently under negotiation, including in the fields of culture, higher education, science and technology, labor, and counterterrorism.

In addition, Indonesia and Qatar reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation and coordination in regional and multilateral forums, including through mutual support for each other's candidacies in international organizations.

Both sides also pledged to strengthen coordination in addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and energy transition, including within the framework of Global South cooperation.

The two delegations exchanged views on developments in ASEAN and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), as well as the latest situation in the Middle East.

In response to the ongoing escalation of conflict in the region, Indonesia and Qatar shared the view that de-escalation, respect for international law and state sovereignty, and the peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue and diplomacy are essential.

Regarding Palestine, both countries reaffirmed their steadfast support for the Palestinian people's struggle, called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and supported safe and unhindered humanitarian access.

Indonesia and Qatar also underscored the importance of reviving a meaningful political process to achieve an independent and fully sovereign Palestinian state based on the Two-State Solution, in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
