RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesian Ambassador to Japan, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, said Japan has significant potential to increase investment in a number of strategic projects in Jakarta, citing the positive track record of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in supporting the capital city’s infrastructure development.

During a meeting with Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung as part of her working visit on June 4-6, Kartini said JICA had made substantial investments in the first phase of Jakarta MRT development and the East Pluit Reservoir pumping system, leaving ample room for further collaboration.

“We see great potential for Japan to continue its investment collaboration in Jakarta,” Kartini said in a statement issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo and received in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

During the visit, Kartini also held technical discussions and conducted field inspections of several strategic projects in the capital.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the sister-province partnership between Jakarta and Tokyo, which has been active since 1989, serves as a strong foundation for deeper cooperation between the two sides.

“The sister-province cooperation between Jakarta and Tokyo, which has been active since 1989, is reinforced by the presence of more than 10,000 Japanese nationals working in 1,500 companies in the capital,” Pramono said.

He noted that six strategic projects in Jakarta currently offer strong potential for attracting further Japanese investment. These include the expansion of the Jakarta MRT, the Greater Jakarta Integrated Transportation Mode (MITJ) project, the Sunter Intermediate Treatment Facility (ITF), the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) seawall project along Jakarta’s northern coast, the strengthening of the East Pluit Reservoir pumping polder system, and Phase 2 of the LRT linking Kelapa Gading to Jakarta International Stadium (JIS).

During a site visit to MRT Jakarta facilities, Kartini reviewed the progress of the MRT Phase 2A project, which is scheduled to begin operations in stages in 2027 and 2029.

Kartini and her delegation also visited the NCICD coastal protection project in West Ancol. The Jakarta administration is seeking Japanese investor participation to complete the remaining 16.7 kilometers of offshore seawall construction.

In addition, strengthening Jakarta’s water management system through the development of polder networks and drainage channels will require further Japanese investment.

The Pluit Reservoir pumping infrastructure, which was previously built with JICA grant assistance, currently meets only around 17 percent of Jakarta’s total needs. Kartini’s visit followed Governor Pramono Anung’s trip to Tokyo in late April 2026 and his meeting with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike.

The Jakarta administration aims to inaugurate the underground commercial area of MRT Jakarta and the extension line from Bundaran HI to Monas during the city’s 500th anniversary celebrations on June 22, 2027.
