RRI.CO.ID, Naypyidaw - Indonesia's Foreign Affairs Minister, Sugiono, visited Naypyidaw, Myanmar, and met with Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing to convey Indonesia’s commitment to supporting inclusive and sustainable peace in the country. During the meeting on Monday, June 8, 2026, Sugiono delivered a message from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reaffirming Indonesia’s support for efforts to promote peace and stability in Myanmar.
“Indonesia is committed to working with all stakeholders in Myanmar to encourage dialogue and support the realization of inclusive and sustainable peace,” Sugiono said in a video statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
He stated that Indonesia is ready to cooperate with all stakeholders in Myanmar to promote dialogue and support the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
According to him, a sustainable peace process must be Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led, while also emphasizing the implementation of ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus as a common framework for addressing the situation in the country.
“Indonesia also believes that a sustainable peace process must be Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led,” Mnister Sugiono said.
He added that the visit reflected Indonesia’s solidarity with the people of Myanmar through various humanitarian, health, and disaster-relief assistance programs, including support provided following the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar in 2025.
“We see various opportunities for cooperation that can be developed, including in the energy sector, food security, and other areas that provide tangible benefits for the people of both countries,” he explained.
In addition to meeting Myanmar’s leader, Sugiono also held talks with Myanmar Foreign Minister U Tin Maung Swe. The two foreign ministers discussed issues of mutual concern at both the bilateral and regional levels, including efforts to strengthen cooperation in the fields of economy, education, and people-to-people relations.
Indonesia views Myanmar as part of the ASEAN family and will continue to engage constructively with Myanmar and other ASEAN member states to promote a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region. Sugiono’s visit forms part of ASEAN’s ongoing engagement with Myanmar in support of peace and stability.
Previously, the foreign ministers of the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia had also visited Myanmar. Indonesia and Myanmar have maintained diplomatic relations since 1949.
“This visit is also part of ASEAN countries’ engagement with Myanmar, following earlier visits by the foreign ministers of the Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia,” Sugiono said.
Both countries were also among the initiators of the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, which strengthened the spirit of solidarity, independence, and cooperation among developing nations. That historical closeness is regarded as an important foundation for strengthening the Indonesia–Myanmar partnership in the future.
