RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Cambodia’s sweeping crackdown on online fraud has left thousands of Indonesians detained, prompting urgent consular intervention from the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh.
Around 1,100 citizens are currently held at a government detention facility in Pochentong, Phnom Penh, following raids over the past month near the embassy compound.
The Indonesian mission, working with the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Directorate for Citizen Protection, has documented detainees and issued temporary travel documents (SPLP) for those without passports.
Officials urged citizens who already hold travel documents to immediately purchase tickets and return to Indonesia, noting that many remain in Cambodia despite receiving SPLPs and overstay fine waivers.
The embassy's Chargé d’Affaires Ad Interim Krishnajie reminded Indonesians not to engage in illegal activities. “For those who have returned home, do not go back to Cambodia and rejoin online scam networks,” he stressed, as quoted by Antara.
The embassy reported that Cambodia continues to intensify operations against suspected scam centers, driving up requests for assistance. Between January 1 and July 9, 2026, a total of 12,207 Indonesians sought repatriation support, with 5,966 already facilitated back home.
Beyond Pochentong, more than 600 Indonesians have been detained at other suspected scam sites, including Bati, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, and Sihanoukville. ***
