RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia has confirmed that nine of its citizens, members of the Global Peace Convoy Indonesia (GPCI) participating in the humanitarian mission GSF 2.0, have been detained by Israeli authorities. As of Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 07:13 Jakarta time, all nine are under the custody of local officials.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the government is working intensively to ensure their protection.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with Indonesian representatives in the region, continues to coordinate closely with various parties to guarantee the rights and safety of the detained citizens. Diplomatic and consular efforts are being maximized so they receive proper assistance and can be safely repatriated,” she stated in a written message to RRI.
Yvonne stressed that the government is monitoring the situation with utmost seriousness. She added that all diplomatic channels will be pursued to safeguard the rights of the Indonesians during the process, while communication with their families is being maintained to provide regular updates.
“The Indonesian government also urges Israel to immediately release all vessels and crew involved in the international humanitarian mission. Indonesia underscores the importance of respecting international humanitarian principles and protecting volunteers engaged in relief efforts in conflict zones,” Yvonne emphasized.
Earlier, five Indonesian nationals had already been detained by Israeli forces while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Four others, who were aboard two separate vessels near Cypriot waters, were later taken into custody, bringing the total to nine.
Indonesia has joined nine other countries--Turkey, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Jordan, Libya, Maldives, Pakistan, and Spain--in issuing a joint statement condemning Israel’s actions against the GSF 2.0 mission. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
