RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Global perceptions toward Palestine are increasingly shifting amid the prolonged conflict in Gaza and the West Bank, Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia Abdalfatah Alsattari said during the commemoration of the 78th Nakba Day on Monday, May 18, 2026, in Jakarta.

He said international support for the Palestinian struggle continues to grow, including in Western countries traditionally known to be close to Israel. According to him, people around the world can now directly witness the impact of war and the suffering of Palestinian civilians through various media platforms.

He said the shift in attitude can be seen in political dynamics in the United States and Europe. He stated that support for Palestine is now growing among Democratic Party voters and even among some Republican supporters in the United States.

“If someone wanted to win an election in the past, they had to support Israel. Now, if you support Israel, you will lose the election,” the Palestinian ambassador in Jakarta said.

“In America, more than 80 percent of the Democratic Party supports Palestine, and in Trump’s political party, more than 40 percent of people support Palestine. Everything is changing,” he added.

Alsattari added that changing public opinion has strengthened Palestine’s confidence in its future. He said the Palestinian people would continue fighting for independence despite military pressure and threats of deportation from their land.

He also highlighted growing international solidarity reflected in humanitarian initiatives by civil society groups in many countries sending aid to Gaza. He said many volunteers continue trying to deliver food and assistance despite knowing they risk being stopped by Israel.

“Right now, in many countries, I think there are around 60 ships going to sea carrying food for the Palestinian people. They know Israel will arrest them, and they know Israel will not allow the food into Gaza,” he said.

“But people around the world feel they have to do something for Palestine. Whatever they can do, they must do it for Palestine,” he continued.

Abdalfatah also accused Israel of implementing a discriminatory system against Palestinians in the West Bank. He pointed to differences in road access, checkpoints, and unequal treatment between Israeli settlers and Palestinians as forms of apartheid.

“The world no longer needs to be told what is happening in Palestine. Everyone can now see it with their own eyes,” he concluded. (Diffa Sephiawardhani)
