RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is looking to broaden its global partnerships by strengthening ties with Panama, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, according to Minister of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency Head Rachmat Pambudy.
The initiative aims to build on Indonesia’s successful cooperation with Pacific nations, which has been praised for delivering tangible economic growth.
“Indonesia has experience in working with Pacific countries that received positive responses and had real impacts on their economic growth,” Minister Rachmat Pambudy said in Jakarta on May 11, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
During a meeting with Indonesian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Panama Hendra Halim, Minister Rachmat expressed hope that Indonesia’s development cooperation model could serve as an example for Central America.
He highlighted potential areas for collaboration, including education, waste management, and the bioeconomy. Indonesia has previously partnered in the region through bamboo craft training and palm oil seedling programs.
Ambassador Hendra Halim added that Indonesia could also assist Nicaragua in establishing a halal certification body, further diversifying cooperation opportunities.
Minister Rachmat Pambudy emphasized the importance of leveraging Indonesia Aid, the country’s international development assistance fund. “Indonesia Aid should not only be used for disaster response but also to support more technical strategies, such as sending planning experts and craft instructors,” he explained.
The National Development Planning Agency will seek concrete proposals from partner countries through the Indonesian Embassy in Panama to ensure follow-up action.
The meeting generated several strategic ideas aimed at fostering intensive cooperation between Indonesia and Central American nations. Both sides expressed optimism that the collaboration would deliver economic and developmental benefits while reinforcing Indonesia’s role as a strategic development partner in the region. ***
