RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Shared ambitions in climate action and sustainable energy are driving Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan toward a new government-to-government memorandum of understanding (MoU) on environmental cooperation.
The initiative, championed by Indonesian Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat and Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan Fadjroel Rachman, is expected to lay the groundwork for South–South collaboration in areas ranging from water management and waste-to-energy projects to hydropower development.
According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Astana, the plan builds on recent meetings in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan addressing water and climate issues, as well as the Regional Ecological Summit 2026 in Kazakhstan.
Minister Jumhur emphasized that the three countries share a common vision on climate change, waste management, green energy, and investment.
“We are not only talking on paper. Together with Ambassador Fadjroel, we agreed to draft the scope of a G-to-G MoU covering knowledge transfer, green investment, and pilot projects,” Jumhur said, as quoted by Antara.
Ambassador Fadjroel highlighted large-scale hydropower as a key area of cooperation, recalling that bilateral discussions on water began in 2024 under then President Joko Widodo.
He noted Tajikistan’s technical expertise, citing the Norak Dam (3,000 MW) and the Rogun Dam, the world’s tallest, with a planned capacity of 3,780 MW.
He added that green economic opportunities could also leverage the Indonesia–Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement (I–EAEU FTA) signed in December 2025. Innovative financing schemes involving state-owned enterprises and private companies from all three countries are expected to be explored.
Ambassador Fadjroel expressed hope that Minister Jumhur would attend upcoming international forums in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, including the 2026 UN Water Conference in the UAE and UNFCCC COP31 in Türkiye.
Both sides also underscored the role of multilateral platforms such as BRICS and the BRICS Centre for Industrial Competences (BCIC) in supporting industrial transformation and human resource development.
“This is not ordinary diplomacy. It is an action-oriented partnership. The world is moving quickly toward green energy and a circular economy, and Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan can move together toward a better future,” Fadjroel said. ***
