RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto urged Southeast Asian leaders to prioritize dialogue, reconciliation, and regional stability during the 48th ASEAN Summit, as the regional grouping intensified discussions on the crisis in Myanmar and border tensions within the region.
Speaking during various summit sessions, including the ASEAN leaders’ retreat, Indonesia emphasized the importance of peaceful political solutions and inclusive processes in addressing regional conflicts.
Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono said ASEAN leaders discussed the latest developments in Myanmar following the country’s election and the formation of a new government.
“From the beginning, Indonesia’s position has been that if the election takes place, it must be inclusive, able to address the existing problems, bring peace, and create a better situation,” Minister Sugiono told reporters on Saturday, May 9, 2026, as quoted on Presidential Secretariat official website.
Indonesia also stressed the importance of implementing ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus as the main framework for resolving the Myanmar crisis. During discussions, ASEAN leaders highlighted several positive steps taken by Myanmar’s new government, which they considered progress worth acknowledging.
Minister Sugiono noted that Myanmar authorities had reportedly released more than 6,000 political prisoners and changed the detention status of Aung San Suu Kyi. “These developments are part of efforts to fulfill commitments under ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus,” he said.
ASEAN leaders also discussed concrete measures to encourage further improvements in Myanmar while continuing engagement with the country.
“As one family in the ASEAN region, member states must continue paying attention, maintaining concern, and engaging Myanmar so it can find its own path toward improving its national situation,” he said.
Beyond Myanmar, he added, President Prabowo also highlighted the importance of reconciliation and dialogue in handling regional border issues, including tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. The President emphasized that border disputes should be managed through negotiation and cooperation that deliver practical benefits for citizens.
“Rather than sharpening our differences, let legal processes continue while we seek positive areas for cooperation that can benefit the people of each country,” the minister said, quoting the President.
He added that Indonesia has consistently applied similar approaches in addressing regional issues through dialogue, negotiation, and cooperation. ***
