RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, revealed that the subregion has a very large potential to develop new renewable energy, ranging from hydropower, solar, wind, to fertile land that has not been optimally utilized. This potential is one of the main assets in supporting the energy transition in the subregion.

"The question is whether we are ready to act based on that potential. Not only to meet our subregional needs, but also to contribute to the ASEAN energy transition," Prabowo conveyed in his speech at the Summit in Cebu, Philippines, Thursday, May 7, 2026.

As quoted by the official website esdm.go.id, Prabowo urged concrete steps from forum member countries to accelerate the development of clean energy in the ASEAN region. Several highlighted steps include the development of hydropower in Borneo (Kalimantan), the expansion of solar energy projects in Palawan, and the utilization of wind energy in coastal areas.

"Our energy transition is moving at full speed." We are currently building 100 GW of solar power plants. Together, we are enhancing our energy infrastructure. BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area) has great potential," the President said.

Meanwhile, after accompanying President Prabowo, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, revealed that this conference ratified the BIMP-EAGA Vision (BEV) 2035 document. This makes the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines region more resilient, inclusive, sustainable, and competitive.

To realize this vision, the four BIMP-EAGA countries also created clusters focused on specific development sectors. One of them is the Power and Energy Infrastructure Cluster (PEIC), where Indonesia serves as the Chair of PEIC for the 2022-2025 period, followed by Malaysia for the 2026-2029 period.

"The results of this cluster include electricity grid interconnection projects, renewable energy projects, rural electrification, and energy efficiency and conservation programs. This program will strengthen subregional collaboration, enabling communities in remote areas to access energy at affordable prices for better welfare," Bahlil stated.
