RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is stepping up its international presence as global dynamics grow increasingly unpredictable, with Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasizing the country’s commitment to its long-standing "independent and active” foreign policy.
“In facing today’s global situation, it is essential for Indonesia to strengthen its position in international relations, guided by the principles of our foreign policy tradition: independent and active,” Minister Sugiono said in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He noted that rapid and complex global changes are driving economic pressures, humanitarian crises, and fragmentation in global governance. Against this backdrop, Indonesia aims to safeguard national interests while contributing to global stability and order, in line with constitutional mandates.
Minister Sugiono explained that Indonesia’s stronger global role is being pursued through concrete, measured, and sustainable diplomatic steps.
Over the past 18 months under President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia has intensified its international engagement, marked by the president’s active participation in global forums and bilateral visits.
Recent trips included meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss cooperation in energy, agriculture, science, and space; talks with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris to expand ties in defense, energy, critical minerals, education, and infrastructure; and visits to Japan and South Korea that yielded trade agreements worth USD 23.63 billion and USD 10 billion respectively.
“Indonesia’s active diplomacy, led directly by the President, ensures our national interests are protected and advanced without sacrificing relations with our neighbors, whether immediate, intermediate, or distant,” Minister Sugiono said.
He stressed that current diplomacy places strong emphasis on economic cooperation, including sustainable investment through Danantara, Indonesia’s national investment vehicle.
Looking ahead, the Foreign Ministry is committed to strengthening strategic partnerships to expand market access and build an inclusive investment ecosystem.
Minister Sugiono concluded by underlining the importance of global stability as a foundation for prosperity. “A stable and orderly world is the aspiration of all humanity. Without stability, development and efforts to improve economic welfare cannot succeed,” he concluded. ***
