RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Thirteen Indonesians affected by a massive fire in Malaysia’s floating settlement of Kampung Bahagia, Sandakan, have been confirmed safe, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The Foreign Ministry, through the Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu and the Directorate for Citizen Protection, continues to monitor the handling of the fire incident in Sandakan," the ministry's Director for Citizen Protection, Heni Hamidah, said in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

She said, based on field inspections and joint registration with local authorities and community leaders, 13 Indonesians were recorded as affected. She confirmed that all were reported safe.

“They are currently accommodated along with other victims at six temporary shelters across Batu Sapi, Sandakan,” she added.

The Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu will maintain coordination with local authorities to update data and ensure protection measures for affected Indonesians are implemented effectively.

The fire destroyed around 1,000 of the 1,200 homes in the area, which is largely inhabited by Malaysians and Filipinos, including Indonesians married to local residents.

“The government is also preparing to facilitate immigration documents for those who lost important papers,” Heni explained.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry urged families in Indonesia to remain calm and await official updates regarding their relatives at the site. (Sri Wahyuni/Bambang MBKA)
