RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Ambassador to Thailand and concurrent representative to the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Hari Prabowo, has called on Asia-Pacific nations to set the standard for cooperation amid mounting geopolitical tensions that threaten the multilateral system.
Speaking at the opening of the 82nd UNESCAP session in Bangkok on Monday, April 20, 2026, Hari emphasized that while the region remains relatively stable compared to other parts of the world, it must not become complacent.
“Asia-Pacific must lead by example. We should not be distracted by rivalries; cooperation must guide us toward shared progress,” he said, in remarks broadcast by UN Web TV, as quoted by Antara.
Hari underscored that UNESCAP should serve as a bridge for building trust through impactful collaboration, delivering tangible results for all, especially vulnerable groups.
He pointed to the region’s resilience, demonstrated through progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and innovations in areas such as digital transformation, green and blue economies, and financial inclusion.
With these strengths, he urged UNESCAP members to ensure the region acts not only as a global engine of growth but also as a “compass” for the world. He stressed that collective responsibility is essential to achieving the 2030 Agenda and advancing economic and social dignity for all.
The meeting also addressed practical steps to deepen cooperation, including market access, simplified technical procedures, and stronger investment and research collaboration.
The 82nd UNESCAP session runs from April 20–24, 2026, in Bangkok, co-hosted by UNESCAP, Azerbaijan, and Thailand. More than 477 participants from 58 member states are attending, with the central theme of ensuring “no one is left behind” in an increasingly dynamic global landscape. ***
