RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has moved quickly to support its citizens affected by a massive fire that swept through a residential area in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia, on Sunday, April 19, 2026.
The ministry's Citizen Protection Director Heni Hamidah confirmed that the Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu and the Directorate for Indonesian Citizen Protection are closely monitoring developments and providing assistance.
“Our priority is ensuring the safety and proper documentation of all Indonesians impacted by the incident,” she said in Jakarta on Monday, April 20, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
The fire destroyed around 1,000 of 1,200 homes in Kampung Bahagia, a floating settlement, leaving more than 9,000 residents displaced. While most victims are Malaysian nationals, many Indonesians -- often married to locals -- as well as Filipinos, were among those affected.
Authorities have reported no fatalities, though some residents sustained injuries while attempting to save belongings or assist neighbors.
Indonesian officials are coordinating with local authorities to gather accurate data on affected citizens, facilitate emergency shelter, and distribute aid.
The consulate is also preparing to help replace immigration documents lost in the blaze. Families in Indonesia with relatives in the area have been urged to remain calm and await official updates.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed concern over the disaster, calling for immediate prioritization of victim safety and aid distribution. ***
