RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - This week, the Institut français d’Indonésie (IFI) and Alliance Française (AF), in collaboration with ambassadors from member, associate, and observer countries of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) based in Jakarta, are once again presenting the Francophonie Week 2026 in Indonesia. The five-day event runs from April 20 to 24, 2026.
International Francophonie Day is observed annually on March 20, marking the establishment of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie in 1970. Beyond its institutional framework, Francophonie reflects the vitality of a language spoken daily by nearly 400 million people across five continents.
As a major international language, French also offers academic, professional, and cultural opportunities. In Indonesia, the language is supported by more than 60,000 learners each year, as well as French language and literature programs at around fifteen leading universities.
This year, more than 100 events are being held simultaneously across nine cities, including Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya, Bali, Medan, Makassar, and Semarang. The program involves 18 embassies from Francophone countries such as France, Canada, Belgium, Tunisia, and Switzerland, along with other partners, and is supported by the Alliances Françaises (AF).
The selection of April 20 is symbolic, marking 200 days ahead of the 2026 Francophonie Summit, which will be held in Cambodia, one of the founding members of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
Over five days starting from April 20, the public can enjoy a wide range of activities, including concerts, film screenings, exhibitions, academic discussions, cultural workshops, and French language competitions. All events are open to the public and aim to introduce the richness of Francophone culture to a broader audience.
Through its diverse programs, Francophonie Week offers an opportunity for Indonesians to explore the French language, broaden cultural perspectives, and strengthen ties with Francophone countries.
