RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is reinforcing its engagement with citizens abroad as Chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Council (DMI) Jusuf Kalla inaugurated the As-Sholihin Mosque in Yokohama on Friday, April 10, 2026, highlighting the growing need for religious and social spaces among the Indonesian diaspora in Japan.
Speaking in Jakarta, he emphasized that mosques serve broader functions beyond worship, particularly for Muslim communities living overseas. “A mosque is not only a place of worship, but also a place to unite the community, educate future generations, and strengthen social life,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
The inauguration comes amid a rising number of Indonesians in Japan, now largely driven by migrant workers, increasing demand for spaces that facilitate both religious practices and community interaction.
He noted that the sustainability of a mosque depends on the active involvement of all stakeholders, including builders, administrators, and worshippers, to ensure it functions as a center for both religious and social activities.
He also highlighted the evolving dynamics of the Indonesian diaspora in Japan, stressing the need for institutions that go beyond ritual functions to strengthen social cohesion.
“We may have different religions, but many moral values are well practiced in Japan. This is an important lesson for all of us,” he added, pointing to shared values such as discipline, honesty, hard work, and cleanliness.
He expressed hope that the As-Sholihin Mosque would serve not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for education, youth development, and community bonding among Indonesians in Japan.
“May this mosque bring blessings and become a center of goodness for the community,” he concluded.
The mosque’s inauguration also symbolizes collaboration between domestic and international stakeholders in supporting the spiritual and social needs of Indonesia’s diaspora. ***
