RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Despite mounting domestic pressure to withdraw Indonesian peacekeepers from Lebanon following the tragic loss of three Indonesian Military (TNI) soldiers, geopolitical experts warn that a hasty exit would deal a significant blow to the nation’s international standing and its long-standing commitment to global stability.

The debate over Indonesia’s presence in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has intensified as security conditions in the region deteriorate. However, calls for a full withdrawal are being met with caution by academics and policymakers who argue that the mission is a cornerstone of Indonesia’s constitutional mandate to participate in world peace.

Sidik Jatmika, a Professor at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY), noted that while the emotional impulse to bring troops home is understandable, a formal withdrawal is currently unrealistic.

"Formally withdrawing is almost impossible without damaging the reputation we have built over decades," Jatmika told RRI Pro 3 on Sunday, Apriln5, 2026.

He suggested that instead of a permanent exit, the government should focus on "operational pauses" or tactical rotations to allow for the physical and mental recovery of personnel. "It should be a pause for refreshment, not a permanent departure."

This sentiment is echoed by the legislature. Dave Laksono, Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR), emphasized that such a strategic move cannot be decided unilaterally. Any shift in deployment requires high-level coordination between the TNI, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the United Nations.

"This is a tangible manifestation of our national commitment," Laksono said, asserting that Indonesia’s role in UNIFIL is a point of sovereign pride that should not be abandoned under duress.

Defying the trend of withdrawal seen in some neighboring countries, the TNI has confirmed it will proceed with its scheduled deployment of 756 fresh personnel to Lebanon in late May 2026. Major General Iwan Bambang Setiawan, Commander of the TNI Peacekeeping Mission Center, clarified that this movement is a routine rotation.

"Our foreign policy is independent and not influenced by the decisions of other nations," Maj. Gen. Setiawan remarked, addressing rumors of following Malaysia's footsteps.

He confirmed that soldiers who have served over a year will return home, ensuring that the new contingent, vetted by UN quotas, continues Indonesia’s active role in maintaining international stability. (Naura Sofia/Bambang MBKA)
