RRI.CO.ID, Seoul – Indonesia and Republic of Korea (RoK) have officially agreed on three major cooperation initiatives to secure national energy supplies. These collaborations cover the fields of clean energy, carbon capture technology, and the management of critical minerals.
Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, signed three important MoUs in Seoul, South Korea, on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. The agreements were witnessed in person by President Prabowo Subianto and President Lee Jae Myung.
He also emphasized that this diplomatic initiative is crucial to prevent disruptions in electricity and fuel supplies. The primary focus is ensuring energy availability for citizens amid unstable geopolitical conditions.
“We have just signed an energy cooperation agreement in the presence of President Prabowo and President Lee Jae Myung. This is of great importance for both nations in addressing potential risks of energy supply disruptions in the region,” Bahlil said.
The government plans to develop renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and nuclear power. Additionally, converting waste into energy is also a priority under the new agreement.
People in remote areas will receive special attention through an energy system designed for self-sufficient islands. This technology is expected to provide even the most remote villages with stable and affordable access to electricity.
Regarding critical minerals, the two countries will collaborate on the processing and recycling of mining products. Environmental standards and post-mining land restoration are key priorities in preserving the surrounding natural environment.
Indonesia is also inviting the Republic of Korea to share advanced technology in the electric vehicle battery industry. This effort aims to create new jobs and reduce air pollution in urban areas.
President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae Myung, welcomed the elevation of these relations to a stronger strategic partnership. In his view, Indonesia is a long-standing friend that plays a key role as a global energy provider.
“On the occasion of President Prabowo’s state visit to Korea, it is highly significant that we will achieve a historic milestone by elevating our bilateral relations to a special comprehensive strategic partnership,” President Lee said.
