RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo: Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto, discussed various forms of cooperation between Indonesia and Japan with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during a meeting at Akasaka Palace, Tokyo, Japan, on Tuesday, 31 March 2026. Topics discussed include amending the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA) and natural resources partnerships.

The IJEPA Amendment Protocol was agreed in 2024, but the ratification process is still ongoing, thus Prabowo hopes it can be finalized as soon as possible.

"Indonesia will work hard to accelerate the ratification and implementation of the amendment protocol to the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement. I hope we can complete it in the near future," he said, as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat.

Other areas of cooperation discussed during the meeting include partnerships in critical minerals, industrialization, renewable energy, and nuclear energy. Prabowo welcomed the involvement of a Japanese company INPEX, which is investing in the Masela Block gas project in Maluku.

"We will also promote the Asia Zero Emission Community, where Japanese companies will be involved in Indonesia," he said.

Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) is an 11-nation platform initiated by Japan in 2022 to advance efforts towards net-zero emissions in Asia cooperation. Besides Indonesia, the AZEC involves most of Southeast Asian countries, as well as Australia.

Meanwhile, PM Sanae stated that Indonesia and Japan are also strengthening maritime security cooperation and advancing plans to establish a defense cooperation agreement to contribute to peace and stability in their respective regions. Amid the current international situation, she emphasized that the two nations' cooperation is crucial for realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific.

"Through these efforts, we intend to further contribute together to peace and stability in the region and the international community," Sanae said.

Sanae noted that Indonesia and Japan will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in the next two years. She said people-to-people exchanges also support the two countries' relations.

"On the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, which has suffered devastating earthquakes and tsunamis in the past, memorial ceremonies for the Great East Japan Earthquake are held every year. This is something we deeply appreciate," she said, referring to both the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in Aceh and a similar disaster in eastern Japan in 2011.
