RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has called for an urgent and transparent United Nations investigation following a series of attacks in southern Lebanon that killed three Indonesian peacekeepers serving under the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in late March 2026.
Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the Middle East, Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Umar Hadi, strongly condemned the attacks on March 29 and 30, urging swift accountability and firm action from the Council.
Indonesia demanded that the Security Council closely monitor the investigation and ensure those responsible are held legally accountable without immunity. It also called on all parties, including Israel, to halt aggression and comply with international law to guarantee the safety of UN personnel and assets.
Umar stressed that the protection of peacekeepers must be a top priority, including emergency measures such as reviewing security protocols and activating evacuation plans in response to escalating tensions in southern Lebanon.
He also urged the Security Council to reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding peacekeepers and take concrete steps to prevent further attacks. Indonesia, alongside France, requested the Council meeting as part of its longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping operations since 1957.
Expressing deep sorrow and anger, Umar paid tribute to the fallen Indonesian soldiers, Captain Zulmi Aditya Iskandar (33), First Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ichwan (25), and Lance Corporal (Praka) Fahrizal Rhomadhon (27), who were killed in separate incidents. Fahrizal died at a UNIFIL post in Adchit Al Qusayr, while Zulmi and Muhammad were killed in an attack on a logistics convoy in Bani Hayyan.
Five other personnel, Captain Sultan Wirdean Maulana, Corporal Rico Pramudia, Corporal Arif Kurniawan, Corporal Bayu Prakoso, and Cadet Deni Rianto, were also injured.
“These peacekeepers were killed and wounded while carrying out a Security Council mandate,” Umar said, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, as quoted by Antara, rejecting claims that the victims were in an active war zone and stressing the need to identify those responsible for the escalation.
Indonesia described the attacks as unacceptable and a major loss not only for the country but also for the United Nations and the broader international community. It warned that repeated strikes on UNIFIL in recent weeks indicate a systematic pattern that could undermine UN Resolution 1701 and pose a serious threat to global peace.
According to Indonesia, such attacks may constitute war crimes under international law. The Indonesian government also called for the swift, safe, and dignified repatriation of the fallen personnel, as well as optimal medical treatment for those injured. ***
