RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The death of an Indonesian peacekeeper in Lebanon has drawn strong condemnation from European leaders, highlighting growing concern over escalating violence affecting United Nations forces in the region.
Private First Class Farizal Rhomadhon, a member of the Indonesian contingent serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was killed in an artillery strike that hit the contingent’s position in Adshit al-Qusyar, southern Lebanon, on Sunday, March 29, 2026. Three other Indonesian soldiers were injured in the attack.
Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin strongly denounced the incident, calling it part of a “shocking escalation of violence” that has also injured other UN peacekeepers.
“I strongly condemn the killing of an Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeeper and the recent escalation of violence,” Martin said on social media platform X, as quoted by Antara, urging all parties, including Hezbollah and Israel, to prevent further attacks on UN personnel and respect peacekeeping roles at all times.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the incident as “beyond the pale”, calling for an investigation into the source of the projectile and urging Israel to cease hostilities in southern Lebanon.
Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot extended condolences to Indonesia and the families of the victims, stressing that attacks on peacekeepers violate international law and may constitute war crimes. He also called for accountability and de-escalation.
Cyprus’ Foreign Ministry similarly expressed condolences to Indonesia and the families of the fallen peacekeepers.
