UN Appoints Envoy on Middle East Conflict

RRI.CO.ID, New York - United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, appointed Jean Arnault as his personal Envoy to lead the UN efforts on the conflict in the Middle East and its consequences. Guterres announced the appointment to journalists in New York, Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
As quoted by UN News, the appointment was because the conflict had spiralled beyond their anticipation. Antonio Guterres said the world is staring down the barrel of a wider war, a rising tide of human suffering, and a deeper global economic shock.
"This has gone too far," he said.
The UN secretary-general affirmed diplomacy must prevail despite mounting tensions and military escalation. He saw peace as the way out.
The newly appointed envoy will work on the ground to support all mediation and peace efforts. He will also engage with all parties, while assessing impacts of the conflict.
United Nations on their website wrote Jean Arnault as a veteran diplomat with 40 years of experience. He also had an extensive background in leading UN missions in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
Between 2015 and 2018, Jean Arnault's was the Delegate of the Secretary-General to the Colombia peace talks and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Colombia. He led UN efforts to verify the implementation of the 2016 Final Peace Agreement in that country.
While from 2019 to 2020, Arnault was the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Bolivia. In 2021, he was appointed as the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Afghanistan and Regional Issues.
