RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Japan have reached a new milestone as both nations formalize a strategic partnership. This collaboration is aimed at securing global energy supply chains and accelerating the clean energy transition.

As reported by Antara, the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tokyo has pledged its full support to oversee the implementation of high-level agreements. This oversight spans critical minerals, nuclear energy, and the massive Abadi Masela gas project.

The collaboration was cemented following a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Bahlil Lahadalia, and Japan’s Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) Minister, Ryosei Akazawa. Held on the sidelines of the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum (IPEM) on Sunday, March 15, 2026, the meeting resulted in a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) focusing on critical minerals and nuclear energy development.

Minister Bahlil emphasized that Indonesia is positioning itself as a key player in the global green technology sector by leveraging its vast mineral wealth.

"I very much welcome this memorandum, especially in the field of critical minerals. We are very open and happy to invite the Japanese Government and Japanese entrepreneurs to jointly manage our critical minerals in Indonesia," Minister Bahlil said during the forum.

Echoing this sentiment, Minister Akazawa highlighted the necessity of cross-border cooperation to navigate volatile global dynamics, particularly in maintaining energy security and supply sustainability. Beyond policy frameworks, the engagement also addressed large-scale industrial projects, specifically the USD 20 billion Abadi Masela Block.

Following a meeting with Inpex Corporation CEO Takayuki Ueda, Minister Bahlil noted that the project has reached approximately 25 percent progress. He emphasized that the development is poised to become a transformative economic driver for Eastern Indonesia.

Indonesian Ambassador to Japan and the Federated States of Micronesia, Nurmala Kartini Sjahrir, reiterated that these agreements represent more than just investment figures. She conveyed that they are a manifestation of a comprehensive strategic partnership.

"KBRI Tokyo is ready to ensure that every point of this agreement is translated into concrete action. This initiative aims to provide added value for the national economy and strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries," said Nurmala in a statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

Ambassador Nurmala further characterized the Abadi Masela Block development as a historic milestone for national energy resilience. To ensure the project remains on track, the Embassy will provide continuous facilitation so that the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) stage can commence by the third quarter of 2026, targeting full production by 2029–2030.

Minister Bahlil has expressed hope that the FEED process might even be accelerated to the second quarter of 2026 to allow for parallel Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) tendering. ***
