RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Former Foreign Minister (2001–2009), Hassan Wirajuda, said that Indonesia needs to closely monitor the development of the conflict between United States and Iran before determining its stance on the possibility of withdrawing from the Board of Peace (BoP).

According to him, there has been no official decision so far regarding the possibility of Indonesia withdrawing from the forum initiated by the United States.

“There has been no decision yet, but we are considering it and observing how the war will end, because ultimately the conflict could weaken the BoP,” Hassan said in Jakarta on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

He further explained that President Prabowo Subianto is considering the impact of the prolonged war between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other on the effectiveness of the forum. Hassan conveyed the longer the conflict continues, the smaller the chance for the BoP to function effectively in promoting peace efforts.

“The longer the war continues, the less effective the BoP will be,” he said.

Previously, on a separate occasion, Foreign Minister, Sugiono, said discussions within the Board of Peace (BoP) are currently put on hold following the escalating conflict in the Middle East. He made the statement while responding to calls for Indonesia to withdraw from the BoP after Israel and the United States launched attacks on Iran.

In addition, Hassan also responded to mediation offers from Indonesia and Pakistan to help ease tensions between the United States and Iran. He said the opportunity for mediation would largely depend on developments on the ground.

According to the former Foreign Minister, the role of mediators usually becomes effective when the parties involved in the conflict begin to feel exhausted by the war and are no longer confident that they can win it.

“At some point in the future, when they are already tired and no longer expect to win, that is when mediators can do their best to end the hostility, end the war, and work for peace,” Hassan said.
