RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry has underscored its support for President Prabowo Subianto’s proposal to personally travel to Tehran to help defuse rising tensions in the Gulf, an initiative considered reflecting the country’s long-standing “independent and active” foreign policy which prioritizes peaceful resolution and the prevention of wider conflict.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang confirmed that President Prabowo had offered to serve as a facilitator for dialogue between Iran and the United States-Israel bloc.

“This is consistent with Indonesia’s principle of promoting peace and preventing escalation,” she told reporters in Jakarta on Friday, March 6, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

She added that the President would proceed with the mission if all parties agreed, and that the ministry was prepared to coordinate with other agencies to support the effort.

The plan was also highlighted by Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI), Jimly Asshiddiqie, following a meeting between President Prabowo and religious leaders at the Presidential Palace on Thursday evening, March 5.

Jimly said President Prabowo intends to visit Iran alongside Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with whom he had spoken earlier by phone. He noted that the President's mediation initiative is not about offering reconciliation in the aftermath of recent violence, but about preventing further escalation in the Middle East. “The prime minister of Pakistan welcomed the idea and agreed to join President Prabowo in Tehran,” he said.

The move signals Indonesia’s ambition to play a more active role in international diplomacy, positioning itself as a bridge-builder at a time when regional tensions risk spiraling into broader conflict. ***
