RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Majelis Ulama Indonesia (Indonesian Ulema Council/MUI) has officially urged the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to withdraw from the Board of Peace (BoP) following military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran on Saturday, 28 February 2026.

In an official statement issued in Jakarta on Sunday, MUI stated that Indonesia’s membership in the BoP is considered ineffective in realizing genuine independence for Palestine.

“For this reason, MUI urges the Indonesian government to revoke its membership from the BoP as it is deemed ineffective in achieving true independence for Palestine,” the statement said.

MUI explained that the United States, which plays a central role in managing the Palestinian conflict through the BoP, faces serious questions regarding the direction of its policies. According to MUI, it remains questionable whether the strategy is truly aimed at achieving a just peace or instead strengthens an imbalanced security architecture that hampers Palestinian independence.

MUI also assessed that US President Donald Trump carried out joint strikes with Israel against Iran, triggering a regional escalation involving various forces, both directly and through proxies. In addition, MUI called on Muslims around the world to continue performing qunut nazilah and praying for Allah’s help and protection for Muslims experiencing hardship, oppression, or calamity.

“MUI calls on the UN and the OIC to take maximum measures to stop the war and respect international law. MUI believes that war will bring about global harm,” MUI said.

MUI also expressed deep condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, as a result of the Israeli and US strikes on February 28, 2026. MUI further condemned Israel’s attack, which was supported by the United States, stating that it contradicts humanitarian values as well as the Preamble of Indonesia’s 1945 Constitution, which affirms the country’s commitment to contributing to world order based on independence, lasting peace, and social justice.

Regarding developments in the region, MUI also highlighted Iran’s military response. MUI understands that Iran’s strikes on Gulf countries were acts of retaliation against US and Israeli attacks targeting military bases.

According to MUI, the retaliatory strikes are justified and protected under international law. MUI considers the series of attacks and counterattacks a serious escalation that could potentially drag the Middle East into a broader open conflict.

“This situation must not be viewed as an isolated incident, but rather as part of a larger geopolitical configuration. It is the duty and responsibility of all countries to realize peace in order to provide maximum protection for civilians,” MUI emphasized.

Furthermore, MUI suspects there are strategic motives behind the attacks, allegedly aimed at systematically weakening Iran’s strategic position in the region while limiting Iran’s support for the Palestinian independence struggle. In the context of the Israel–Palestine conflict, MUI encourages various countries to act as peace mediators to halt military actions that are seen as potential instruments of political pressure to secure Israel’s regional dominance over Palestine.
