RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah has brought a taste of home to the local diaspora by hosting a Ramadan takjil (iftar) market, offering both a nostalgic atmosphere and a legal space for community trade.
Consul General Yusron Ambary said the event, titled “Ngabuburit di Hadigah Wisma”, was designed to channel informal trading activities - often seen in public parks - into a regulated setting at Wisma Indonesia.
“Ramadan provides the perfect moment to move these activities from the parks into Wisma Indonesia, making them legal while recreating the familiar ngabuburit and takjil market experience from back home,” Yusron explained in a written statement on Thursday, February 26, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Beyond commerce, the initiative also serves as a social gathering point for Indonesians living in Jeddah and surrounding areas. The inaugural market, held on February 20, drew around 350 visitors and featured 15 stalls operated by Indonesian nationals.
According to Yusron, vendors reported strong sales, with several stalls selling out completely. The market is scheduled to return on February 27, with hopes it will become a regular fixture embraced by the community.
“Many sellers said the profits were quite encouraging. Some even sold out entirely,” Yusron noted, adding that the consulate hopes to sustain the event and build on its positive reception. ***
