RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) received World Bank delegates. The visit reviewed progress of Indonesia’s multi-hazard early warning system strengthening.
The meeting took place at BMKG Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday, 11 February 2026. The World Bank delegates were led by the Director Strategy and Operations for East Asia and the Pacific, Elisabet Huybens, and Country Director for Indonesia and Timor Leste, Carolyn Turk.
BMKG Head, Teuku Faisal Fathani, welcomed the delegation. He appreciated the strategic partnership in strengthening national early warning systems.
“This visit reflects a strong partnership between BMKG and the World Bank,” Faisal said. He affirmed collaboration through the Indonesia Disaster Resilience Initiatives Project.
According to BMKG, the project began in 2019 and ended on 31 October 2025. It modernized seismic monitoring and strengthened institutional early warning capacities.
The agency also introduced an Artificial Intelligence based processing system. The system is expected to operate nationally starting next year.
Meanwhile, Deputy for Geophysics, Nelly Florida Riama, presented InaTEWS development progress. The new center integrates earthquake and tsunami information processing.
During demonstrations, BMKG showed rapid earthquake parameter releases. Tsunami warnings are issued in less than three minutes.
BMKG also serves as Tsunami Service Provider regionally. It provides tsunami early warning information to 28 countries.
World Bank representatives praised BMKG’s significant achievements. They underscored stronger information dissemination across Indonesia’s vast population.
Moreover, Faisal explained BMKG operates on the upstream information side. Downstream coordination involves BNPB and regional governments preparing evacuations.
