RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has entered into a strategic partnership with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to enhance the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of the country’s civil aviation sector. 

The collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. Director General of Civil Aviation Lukman F. Laisa emphasized that the agreement provides a foundation for advancing Indonesia’s aviation system. 

“This MoU serves as the basis for cooperation in developing civil aviation in Indonesia, ensuring a system that is safe, secure, efficient, and sustainable,” he said on Wednesday, February 11, as quoted by Antara.

The signing was carried out by Lukman and Sheldon Hee, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific. Lukman described the MoU as a strategic step to strengthen cooperation between the government and the global aviation body, particularly in improving safety, security, and service quality.

Under the agreement, both parties will collaborate across several areas, including aviation safety and security; regulatory harmonization; operational studies and consultations; and knowledge-sharing and adoption of international best practices.

The partnership also opens opportunities for data and information exchange, potential cost reductions for airport intelligence services, and human resource development through IATA’s training and capacity-building programs.

“By supporting the competence of aviation personnel and promoting data-driven policymaking, we hope this collaboration with IATA will run smoothly and deliver tangible benefits for Indonesia’s aviation industry,” Lukman added.

Financially, the MoU is structured around each party’s available budget, without binding financial obligations. It also underscores commitments to intellectual property rights and confidentiality in data exchange.

IATA’s Sheldon Hee affirmed the organization’s readiness to contribute technical expertise and global experience. 

“IATA is committed to working with the Indonesian Directorate General of Civil Aviation to strengthen the country’s aviation system in line with international standards and practices,” he said.

The agreement will remain in effect for five years, with the option of a three-year extension based on evaluation and mutual consent. ***
