Indonesia-Cyprus Relations Poised for Closer Cooperation

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has expressed its commitment to strengthening ties with Cyprus, with Ambassador Junimart Girsang underscoring the importance of expanding collaboration across multiple sectors.
The Indonesian envoy to Italy, who also serves as ambassador to San Marino, Malta, and Cyprus, conveyed this message while presenting his Letter of Credence to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia on Monday, February 9, 2026, according to a statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Rome, Antara reported.
Junimart highlighted Indonesia’s readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation in politics, economics, socio-cultural exchange, and the protection of Indonesian citizens abroad. He also delivered greetings and a message of friendship from Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to President Christodoulides.
In response, the Cypriot leader welcomed Indonesia’s initiative, describing the country as a key player in Southeast Asia that contributes to regional stability and the advancement of multilateralism. President Christodoulides affirmed Cyprus’ willingness to broaden cooperation, including within the framework of European Union-Indonesia relations.
Diplomatic ties between Indonesia and Cyprus date back to 1987. Relations gained new momentum with the reopening of the Cypriot Embassy in Jakarta in October 2023. Most recently, the two nations convened their second Bilateral Political Consultation Forum in Jakarta on February 6, 2025, focusing on citizen protection, economic collaboration, and political dialogue.
Ahead of the credential ceremony, Ambassador Junimart also met with members of the Indonesian community and diaspora in Cyprus during a gathering in Limassol on February 8, further reinforcing people-to-people connections alongside official diplomacy. ***
