Indonesia-Japan Trade Reaches US$32 Billion

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Japan continue to foster the bilateral relations. It is marked by growing trade cooperation and strong people-to-people connections.
Indonesia’s Minister of Trade, Budi Santoso, revealed that total bilateral trade between Indonesia and Japan reached US$32 billion last year. It positions Japan as Indonesia’s fourth-largest trading partner.
“Last year, total bilateral trade with Japan was recorded at US$32 billion. Japan reigns as the fourth largest trading partner for Indonesia,” Budi Santoso stated during the celebration of Japan’s National Day held by Japanese Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday, 5 February 2026.
He affirmed that economic cooperation between the two countries has continued to expand through various agreements, including the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA), which facilitates trade, investment, and technology exchange.
Meanwhile, Japan’s Chargé d’Affaires ad interim to Indonesia, Myochin Mitsuru, highlighted the importance of human connections as the foundation of long-term bilateral relations.
“I firmly believe that this human connection represents the most powerful and promising vision for the future of Japan-Indonesia relations,” Myochin stated.
According to him, cooperation between Indonesia and Japan has developed steadily across multiple sectors, including infrastructure, education, science and technology, and cultural exchange. Japanese support for major infrastructure projects such as the MRT Jakarta has also contributed significantly to improving urban mobility and public welfare.
The reception, held in celebration of the birthday of His Majesty Emperor Naruhito, was attended by government officials, diplomats, business leaders, academics, and representatives from both countries. The event reflected the strong partnership and mutual trust that have characterized Indonesia-Japan relations for decades.
Besides, both governments expressed their commitment to further enhancing collaboration in trade, investment, sustainable development, and people-to-people exchanges, especially as the two nations prepare to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2028.
