RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia and South Korea are exploring deeper cooperation in the field of trademarks to enhance intellectual property protection and boost the competitiveness of national products. The initiative was discussed during a meeting in Jakarta earlier this week.

Director of Cooperation, Empowerment, and Education at the Indonesian Ministry of Law, Yasmon, emphasized that strengthening collaboration with South Korea is strategic for advancing trademark protection, facilitating product trade, and ensuring legal certainty for businesses through a robust and integrated intellectual property system.

“We hope this partnership will grow stronger and more productive, particularly in promoting intellectual property protection and its benefits for business actors,” Yasmon said in Jakarta on Thursday, February 5, 2026, as quoted by Antara. 

He noted that South Korea is the only country with a dedicated ministry for intellectual property, underscoring its commitment to making IP a pillar of economic development.

Director General of Trademarks and Industrial Design at the South Korean Ministry of Intellectual Property (MIP), Lee Choonmoo, expressed hope for expanding trademark cooperation. 

He highlighted that bilateral trade between the two countries has reached USD 25 billion, supported by a special partnership, making institutional exchanges vital for promoting intellectual property and protecting products, particularly in trademarks.

He noted that trademark registrations from South Korea in Indonesia continue to grow across goods and services, while Indonesian brands are also gaining traction in South Korea. “This is a valuable opportunity for institutional cooperation,” Lee said. 

He further explained that South Korea’s Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) has been elevated to the Ministry of Intellectual Property, strengthening its policy coordination and oversight functions. This institutional advancement, he added, provides a foundation for expanding cooperation with ASEAN countries, including Indonesia.

Looking ahead, both institutions agreed to pursue further discussions on productive and efficient inter-agency collaboration. DGIP and MIP plan to hold formal meetings and comparative studies on trademark policies and systems to share best practices in trademark services. ***
