RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Slovakia has signaled its commitment to strengthening relations with Indonesia, beginning with student exchanges as the foundation of a broader strategic partnership. 

Speaking at a joint press conference with Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár emphasized that “everything starts with education”. 

Blanar highlighted Slovakia’s strong track record in education, particularly in engineering, which he said could benefit Indonesia as it tackles challenges common to developing nations, such as infrastructure, electricity, and the management of water, waste, and sanitation.

He further noted Slovakia’s readiness to cooperate in nuclear energy, offering opportunities for Indonesian students to study nuclear science as the country prepares to build its first nuclear power plant. 

“We have more than 60 years of experience in building, operating, and even handling accidents and decommissioning nuclear power plants,” Blanar said, as quoted by Antara.

Beyond education and energy, the two ministers agreed to establish a joint commission to advance economic cooperation, focusing on priority areas to ensure effectiveness. Tourism was also identified as a key sector, with Blanar expressing Slovakia’s interest in collaborating with Indonesia and announcing plans to open an honorary consulate in Bali.

“As a member of the European Union, you can count on us to support all initiatives and ongoing activities between the EU and Indonesia,” Blanar added.

On the strategic partnership front, Blanar confirmed that Indonesia and Slovakia aim to finalize and sign a partnership agreement in Slovakia, expressing hope that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will visit the country. 

“The visit was planned last year but rescheduled. We are ready to welcome your President in Slovakia and sign this strategic partnership as tangible proof of strengthened cooperation,” he said.

Blanar also thanked Indonesia for supporting Slovakia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–2029 term, as well as for its backing in other multilateral organizations. ***
