Indonesia and China Push for Deeper Strategic Partnership

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - During his visit to Shanghai, China, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi. The meeting was a key item on the Coordinating Minister’s agenda in Shanghai, alongside signing the establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Organization (WAICO).
“Indonesia wants to deepen its strategic partnership with China,” said Coordinating Minister Airlangga from Shanghai on Saturday, 18 July 2026.
Discussions focused on priority agendas and the implementation of a comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and China. The partnership covers trade, investment, and governance of global artificial intelligence (AI), as well as priority economic issues between the two countries.
Minister Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping’s appreciation for Indonesia’s cooperation as one of WAICO’s founding member states. Coordinating Minister Airlangga proposed that Indonesia be considered for a senior position within WAICO’s secretariat.
At the close of the meeting, Coordinating Minister Airlangga also expressed full support for China’s chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2026. This year’s APEC meeting will take place in Shenzhen in November 2026.
“Indonesia proposes that a presidential-level meeting between the two countries be held on the sidelines of APEC. We also propose a business summit to further strengthen cooperation and friendship between our nations,” said the Coordinating Minister.
He reiterated that Indonesia–China synergy should be guided by the spirit of the Global South, transparency and respect for digital sovereignty. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
