RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo – The Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Tokyo, in cooperation with the Employment Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan), held a dialogue on Sunday (January 25, 2026) to enhance Indonesian Migrant Workers’ (PMI) understanding of the importance of employment social security in Japan.

According to a statement from KBRI Tokyo on Thursday, Coordinator for Protocol and Consular Affairs at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, Dara Yusilawati, expressed hope that Indonesian interns in Japan would benefit from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan programs as a form of protection during their employment.

“At present, there are more than 180,000 Indonesian migrant workers in Japan, consisting of around 110,000 interns and 69,000 Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) employees. Interns are also workers who are entitled to labor rights and are vulnerable to workplace accidents. We hope they can benefit from BPJS Ketenagakerjaan,” Dara Yusilawati said.

The dialogue discussed various facilities and benefits provided by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan for Indonesian migrant workers, including registration procedures and claim mechanisms, to ensure that workers can fully access their rights.

Meanwhile, Director of Services at Indonesia’s Employment Social Security Agency, Roswita Nilakurnia, explained that Indonesia’s Employment Social Security Agency (BPJS) protects migrant workers before departure, during employment, and after returning from work.

“BPJS Ketenagakerjaan was established by the government to protect Indonesian migrant workers to demonstrate the state’s presence,” Roswita said.

She added that the protection includes work accident insurance and death benefits at an affordable contribution of around Rp332,500 for a 24-month employment period. In addition, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan also offers an Old-Age Security program for migrant workers.

The event was attended and positively received by members of the Indonesian Interns and Tokutei Gino Association in Japan (IPTIJ). IPTIJ Chairman, Fahrul Sabbikhis, expressed appreciation for KBRI Tokyo’s facilitation, which enabled direct dialogue with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan.

“This activity provides a more comprehensive understanding of employment protection for Indonesian migrant workers and motivates IPTIJ to continue playing an active role in supporting their welfare,” Fahrul said.

Previously, on Friday (January 23, 2026), KBRI Tokyo also facilitated a meeting between BPJS Ketenagakerjaan and Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) to discuss social security cooperation aimed at strengthening protection for Indonesian migrant workers from both countries.
