RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Underscoring its concrete commitment and emphasizing the importance of ASEAN's constructive approach in resolving the Myanmar crisis, Indonesia has declared its readiness to facilitate inclusive dialog with all parties involved in the crisis.
“Indonesia is also open to offering practical support, including sharing our valuable experiences in nation-building, reconciliation, and regional autonomy,” Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono stated, as quoted on the Ministry's official website on Thursday, January 29, 2026.
The Minister made statement following his participation in the Extended Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC), held as part of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat in Cebu, the Philippines, on Wednesday, January 28.
During the meeting, the Philippine Foreign Minister, serving as ASEAN Chair’s Special Envoy for Myanmar, provided a briefing on the latest developments in the country. The consultation focused on the implementation of the 5PC and ASEAN’s future priorities in addressing the Myanmar crisis.
Indonesia expressed appreciation for the Philippine Foreign Minister’s efforts to meet with various stakeholders in Myanmar, describing the initiative as a meaningful and relevant contribution.
Minister Sugiono stressed that the situation in Myanmar remains a major test of ASEAN’s resilience and credibility. “This visit by the special envoy to Myanmar demonstrates ASEAN’s commitment to ensuring reconciliation remains a top priority,” he said.
He underlined that ASEAN must continue to engage constructively and consistently in supporting peace efforts in Myanmar, in line with its shared commitment to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
Looking ahead, Sugiono emphasized the need for measured and creative approaches to build lasting and inclusive stability, as well as a strong foundation for Myanmar’s nation-building process.
Myanmar’s crisis remains one of Southeast Asia’s most pressing humanitarian and political challenges, marked by ongoing armed conflict, mass displacement, and deepening economic collapse.
More than 16 million people reportedly are projected to need humanitarian assistance in 2026, with millions already displaced since the military takeover in 2021. ***
