RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Melaka-Dumai roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ferry port project has gained significant momentum following a formal reaffirmation of support from Melaka State Government on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
The state government of Melaka has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the construction of the RoRo ferry port that will connect Melaka and Dumai, Indonesia.
The pledge was conveyed during a bilateral meeting between Melaka officials and Indonesian Consul General in Johor Bahru, Sigit S. Widiyanto, held in Melaka on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Indonesian Consulate General.
Representing the Melaka government, Datuk Shamsul Ambia bin Abdul Aziz, Secretary of the UPEN Melaka Division, welcomed Consul General Sigit and underscored the state’s readiness to move forward with the cross-border connectivity project across the Strait of Malacca.
Specifically, Tanjung Bruas Port has declared its preparedness to finalize plans for the Dumai–Melaka RoRo facility in the near future. The Melaka government also announced plans to hold a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to review the results of a pre-feasibility study completed by Universiti Teknikal Melaka (UTeM).
Responding to the initiative, Consul General Sigit praised Melaka’s commitment but stressed the importance of concrete steps. He expressed hope that Melaka would soon provide a “positive signal", such as a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction.
“A positive signal from Melaka is crucial to reignite enthusiasm and optimism among all stakeholders. Indonesia is already prepared with its infrastructure, and discussions on this route have been ongoing for more than a decade,” Sigit said, as quoted by Antara.
Separately, Sigit also noted recent discussions surrounding the idea of a Melaka–Dumai bridge. However, he clarified that no formal government-to-government talks between Indonesia and Malaysia have yet taken place regarding the proposed project. ***
