KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to address the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. The occasion holds historic significance, as it echoes the diplomatic legacy of his father, Professor Sumitro Djojohadikusumo.

President Prabowo’s presence at the UN’s highest forum is seen as a symbolic continuation of a family tradition rooted in Indonesia’s diplomatic struggle. “We hope Prabowo will carry forward Professor Sumitro’s mission to strengthen global multilateralism,” said Dino Patti Djalal, founder of the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI), in a statement on Saturday, September 20, 2025.

Professor Sumitro notably led Indonesia’s delegation to the UN in 1948–1949, a critical period for the young nation’s international recognition. Among his key contributions was a memorandum condemning Dutch military aggression, which he submitted to the U.S. Secretary of State.

The memorandum was later published by The New York Times on December 21, 1948, sparking global attention. It asserted that Dutch actions violated the Renville Agreement and undermined the UN’s mandate.

Beyond voicing Indonesia’s stance in international forums, Sumitro actively built regional alliances. At a 1949 meeting in India, he successfully rallied support to pressure the Dutch government.

These efforts culminated in December 1949, when the Netherlands formally recognized Indonesia’s sovereignty through the Round Table Conference. A year later, on August 17, 1950, Indonesia officially returned to its status as a unified republic.

According to Dino, President Prabowo’s upcoming speech is highly anticipated amid growing global challenges to multilateral cooperation. “Multilateralism is currently in a troubling state,” said the former Indonesian Ambassador to the U.S.

Hamdan Hamedan, Senior Expert at the Government Communication Agency, emphasized the strategic importance of Prabowo’s address. The President is slated to speak third, following Brazil and the United States.

“This is a pivotal moment, with global attention sharply focused. His speech could influence the trajectory of international debate and define Indonesia’s role on the world stage,” Hamdan noted.

President Prabowo’s appearance marks Indonesia’s return to the UN General Assembly after a ten-year absence. It signals a renewed commitment to strengthening the country’s position in global diplomacy.

“After more than a decade, Prabowo’s direct participation in the UNGA reflects Indonesia’s resolve to reinforce multilateralism,” he added. ***
