Indonesian Sailor Perishes in Seychelles Maritime Accident

KBRN, Antananarivo: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia is actively managing the case of Indonesian crew members affected by the sinking of the MV Serdal in Seychelles, according to official statement, Monday (2/6/2025).

According to local authorities, the MV Serdal, a merchant vessel registered under the Comoros flag, was en route to the Comoros Islands. Tragically, on May 29, 2025, at 09:00 local time, the ship encountered an accident in waters near Seychelles while conducting logistics transit. The vessel capsized due to sudden adverse weather conditions and high waves.

The MV Serdal was carrying a total of 11 crew members, including 9 Indonesian nationals and 2 from Nepal. Following the incident, one Indonesian national, identified as MB, has been reported deceased, while the remaining ten crew members were successfully rescued. The Indonesian Embassy in Antananarivo has also received confirmation that the shipping company will take full responsibility for addressing the aftermath of this incident.

In accordance with local regulations in Seychelles, the remains of MB are currently undergoing an autopsy. Meanwhile, three of the surviving crew members are receiving outpatient care for their injuries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Antananarivo will continue to provide assistance to the affected Indonesian nationals, including support in obtaining lost documents and facilitating repatriation processes. Additionally, the ministry and the embassy will closely monitor the investigation conducted by Seychelles authorities to determine the exact cause of the sinking of the MV Serdal.
