KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesian Navy foiled an attempt to smuggle Indonesian immigrant workers (PMI) and wildlifes that were to be taken to Malaysia on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
The head of the Navy Information Service, First Admiral I Made Wira Hady confirmed that the incident occurred in the Malacca Strait area. At that time, KRI Karotang-872 commanded by Marine Major (P) Fa'iq Mumtaz Muhammad was patrolling the sea area.
During the patrol, patrol officers saw a suspicious motorboat movement. “Then an inspection and arrest of the ship was carried out,” explained Wira as quoted by antaranews.com.
Officers found 10 migrant workers who did not fulfill legal procedures, two Bangladeshi foreigners and 26 protected animals.
“Some of the protected animals include 4 white civets, 3 monkeys, 12 siamangs and 7 cuscuses, which will be brought from Tanjung Balai Asahan to Malaysia,” Wira explained.
All passengers of the motorboat and its cargo were taken to Tanjung Balai Asahan Lanal for further investigation.
Wira hoped that this effort would provide a deterrent effect for the public not to smuggle illegal labor and protected animals to other countries. ***
