RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Cubeb pepper (Piper cubeba), known in Indonesia as kemukus, is an aromatic spice from the Piper family that has been used traditionally in herbal preparations. The dried fruits contain essential oils, cubebin lignans, terpenes, and alkaloids that contribute to their distinctive aroma and biological properties.
According to research published in the journal Phytochemistry, Piper cubeba contains lignans such as cubebin and related compounds that have attracted interest in natural product research. These compounds are studied for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities.
Traditional use of kemukus has been associated with respiratory and digestive preparations. Its aromatic oils provide a warming sensation and have contributed to its role in traditional herbal formulations.
Scientific studies have explored the antimicrobial properties of cubeb essential oil. Certain volatile compounds have demonstrated inhibitory effects against microorganisms in laboratory experiments.
The fragrance industry also values kemukus because of its unique spicy aroma. Essential oils from Piper species are commonly investigated for applications in perfumes, aromatherapy, and botanical products.
Although kemukus has traditional uses, concentrated extracts require careful evaluation. More clinical studies are needed to establish safe therapeutic doses and confirm specific health benefits.
