RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Gambir (Uncaria gambir) is an Indonesian botanical product traditionally obtained from the leaves and twigs of the plant through extraction and drying processes. Rich in catechin, tannins, and polyphenolic compounds, gambir has long been used in traditional practices and has gained scientific interest for oral health and natural product applications.
A study published in the journal Industrial Crops and Products reported that gambir contains high concentrations of catechin, a flavonoid compound responsible for many of its biological activities. Catechin contributes to antimicrobial and antioxidant properties observed in gambir extracts.
One of the most recognized applications of gambir is in oral care. Traditional use of gambir in betel-related practices has encouraged research into its ability to inhibit certain oral microorganisms due to its tannin content.
Gambir has also attracted interest as a natural antioxidant source. Polyphenolic compounds from gambir are being explored for applications in food preservation, pharmaceuticals, and botanical products.
Beyond health applications, gambir remains an important Indonesian agricultural commodity. Its extracts are used in various industries, including tanning, natural dyes, and herbal product development.
Although gambir has valuable traditional uses, excessive consumption of concentrated tannin-rich extracts may affect nutrient absorption. Proper formulation and controlled use remain important.
